More crazy nonsense from FL Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) seen in
his latest stunt reported on from NBC News with this headline:
“DeSantis-backed law
barring Chinese citizens from owning land in Florida has galvanized Asian-Americans”
Wen Raiti is a Chinese-American community leader in
Jacksonville, FL and she has been a Republican for more than a decade as a small
business owner. GOP policy such as fiscal conservatism and small government
ethos appealed to her and she registered as a Republican.
Ms. Raiti said the law was the last straw for her added to
all the hostile rhetoric and scapegoating from Republicans directed at Asian
Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic, and adding: “It’s in our Constitution
to treat everyone with equality and justice so that everyone can live here
without fear. The Republican Party has abandoned these principles. Chinese Americans
in Florida do not typically engage with the electoral process beyond issues affecting
education and family. The Chinese community is typically more-quiet when it
comes to politics. This bill has now changed that dynamic.”
But last May when Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed SB 264 into
laws that banned Chinese citizens from buying property in FL, Ms. Raiti
changed her party affiliation and began campaigning for local and national
Democratic candidates.
Anger toward SB 264 has turbocharged voter mobilization
efforts in the Chinese-American community. Organizers and elected officials have
been pushing conservatives to defect from the GOP while inspiring first-time
voters to register as Democrats.
FL State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando), an outspoken critic
of SB 264, said: “This bill alone helped activate a lot of people in the
Chinese-American community who historically are not engaged with the
government, especially the state government. Now hundreds of Chinese-Americans
have traveled to Tallahassee to protest and testify at committee hearings and have
spearhead fundraising drives. In my dozen years in office I’ve never seen this
kind of presence.”
Impact from SB 264: Chinese
nationals who buy property could face exorbitant fines and up to five years in
prison, and sellers who knowingly violate the restrictions could face up to one
year in prison.
Note: SB 264 also restricted, but did not ban, land purchases by
some citizens of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and Venezuela.
In April, a federal appeals court heard a challenge to the law after four Chinese immigrants in FL backed by the ACLU and other civil rights groups sued the state.
Advocates said they’re hoping for an injunction ruling.
The DOJ supported the filing last June, but a judge ruled against it.
Echo King, president of the FL Asian-American Justice Alliance (FAAJA), a nonprofit organization that was established last year to fight anti-Asian discrimination and she said: “After the law passed, we realized that Asian Americans really have no voice. We’re contributing to this country, so why are we being targeted?”
Since Asian American political representation in Florida is scarce, King said the FAAJA targeted legislators willing to represent the community.
The organization sent out questionnaires to determine which
candidates supported issues important to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,
and it conducted an extensive voter registration education in the community,
then King said: “We’re showing people why it’s so important to vote. We are
endorsing candidates. We’re seeing lots of people being involved in the
community.”
SB 264 has had a noticeable impact on the Chinese American
community, King said. Many people have put their house on the market, she said,
while others are waiting to see if the law gets overturned before deciding
whether to leave the state. An immigration attorney, King said the legislation
motivated her to become more involved in the electoral process by running as a
delegate to the DNC. King also said at least 25 Chinese American voters changed
their affiliations from “no party preference to Democratic” and voted for her.
My 2 Cents: In my view and opinion and now more so based on then
above, it is truly apparent DeSantis is the worst Governor in America.
All that above and his gay bashing and banning books like this in FL as well his speech restrictions like “Don’t say Gay, or don’t read this book or that one,” either.
It all shows his utter racist
and bigoted craziness that proves he is not fit to serve in any office of
authority anywhere in the nation.
There is no way on Earth
that I would ever move or live or even visit FL – they could not even pay me to
live there, period.
Thanks for stopping by.
