(CNN) The final and 5th
Senate Intelligence Committee report detailing how
Russia's 2016 election interference was encouraged by President Donald Trump
and his campaign raises the stakes for the current campaign at a time when
Trump is openly amplifying Russian disinformation.
The report findings (966 pages .pdf) & recommendations reinforce
the original 17 intelligence agency warnings and adds that Russia continues to
target the 2020 election, specifically directed at Trump's 2020 opponent Joe
Biden.
Key Parts from the Report:
§ Russian intelligence operatives were closer to top
Trump campaign efforts than was previously known in 2016.
§ The well-documented and continuous disinformation from
Russia is linked well past the 2016 election.
§ The findings are so alarming that the bipartisan
Senate committee called for several changes to protect national security in
2020.
§ The committee’s main conclusion is that “campaigns
should recognize that campaign staff are attractive targets for foreign
intelligence services.
Former Chairman, Sen. Richard
Burr (R-NC) said: “The threat is ongoing. My hope is that this report and the
Committee's work will provide the American people with more insight into the
threats facing our nation and the steps necessary to stop them.”
For Democrats, the report
promoted a new round of calls for national security reform and diligence in
American elections.
My 2 cents: Trump 2020 is out to win any way possible; legal or otherwise; honest or underhanded; a fact that is more apparent every passing day.
This final report is comprehensive and an eye-opener for sure. I have read it.
What is amazing to me (again) is how Trump himself still denies Russian efforts to get and keep him in office – a theme a lot of Republicans still agree with since Trump was not removed from office for that very reason.
That is a huge historical error for sure.
That is mostly thanks to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his strong armed tactics and control over the GOP-run Senate to not have removed Trump from office - now he owns the GOP.
Someday, sooner than later I
predict, they will realize that mistake and many of them (hopefully) will pay the price
at the ballot box this November. We shall see.
Thanks for stopping by.
