FLASH UPDATE: TRUMP SIGNS THE RELIEF LATE TODAY. SOME HARM ALREADY HIT SOME 14 MILLION WHO LOSE UNEMPLOYMENT FOR THE PREVIOUS WEEK - THAT'S THE LAW.
That breaking news here from NBC News and most other sources as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Original story follows:
Washington
Post: If Trump does not sign the CoVID relief bill, what happens (my abbreviated version to fit the blog below). This from Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) quote here
from CNN (my
emphasis):
“Trump will be
remembered for ‘chaos and misery’
if he doesn't sign the relief bill”
Unemployment Benefits Lapse: The economic blow is likely to land hardest on 14 million people who lost their jobs early in the pandemic. They have exhausted benefits and are unlikely to see any aid until Trump signs bill into law. Unemployment, sick leave, and housing aid expiring threaten Americans with sudden ruin.
Signing the bill now still could have taken weeks to implement the payments due to old mailing systems and such.
Trump now threatens greater delays, keeping checks out of the hands of
workers who need it most, with no guarantee they’ll ever receive the payments
they missed.
Eviction Crisis: As many as 17 million households are behind on their rent and an immediate threat of eviction starting January 1.
Out of work, and out of cash these families have thus far benefited from limited federal eviction protections that are set to expire in four days.
Millions of Americans risk losing power and water as massive, unpaid utility bills pile up. Lawmakers sought to implement an eviction moratorium of their own as part of the $900 billion stimulus yet signed.
The package also includes $25 billion to help renters pay back their
bills and other costs, including their electricity and water payments, amid
growing concerns that Americans are falling far behind on their bills.
New programs put on hold: Hundreds of billions in aid for small businesses, households, schools, transportation services, vaccine distribution, internet access, and more will fall into limbo.
Lawmakers
agree $900 billion would not heal the failing economy, but it would help close
that gap.
My 2 cents: Sen. Toomey
nails Trump precisely – where was he during the impeachment vote to remove …
oh, yeah, hiding someplace like a scared bunny.
Now he is retiring and not
seeking reelection – guilt does that sometime to some Gophers – albeit for many
of them.
Thanks for stopping by.
