This “new” Trump-run GOP is without any doubt dragging down the country, keeping us divided in the most-ugly way to prop up and stand with Trump. Sadly, all the while they constantly and falsely blame President Biden and the entire Federal government as being “weaponized” against them and our entire democratic form of government. The is reported on here from THE AP with this headline and an excellent read:
“Stand
with Trump” becomes the rallying cry as Republicans amplify attacks on the
U.S. justice system”
WASHINGTON (AP) —
Moments after Trump pleaded not guilty to federal charges in Florida claiming that
he hoarded classified documents and then conspired to obstruct an investigation
about it, the Republicans in Congress have his back, and that seems to be growing, too.
The mounting legal jeopardy Trump finds himself in has
quickly become a political rallying cry for the Republicans,
many of whom acknowledged they had not fully read the 49-page federal
indictment but stood by the indicted former president, adopting his grievances
against our entire federal system and especially the DOJ and FBI.
It’s an unparalleled example of how Trump has transformed
the Republican Party that once embraced “law and order” but is now defending,
justifying and explaining away the grave charges he faces with multiple counts
of violating the Espionage Act by hoarding classified documents containing some
of the country’s most sensitive national security secrets.
At the same time, Trump is rewriting the job description of
what it means to lead a major American political party. Making another run for
the White House, Trump is attacking the U.S. justice system that is
foundational to democracy and emboldening Republican lawmakers to follow along.
Examples of this new GOP political battle cry:
GOP House
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) dashed off a fundraising email
decrying the “witch hunt” against the former president and urging donors to
sign up and “stand with Trump.”
Rep. Elise Stefanik
(R-NY) the fourth-ranking in the GOP-run House tweeted: “Stand with Trump.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-AL) ultra-right radical at a public meeting in the Capitol basement compared the case against Trump to the federal prosecution of people at the January 6 insurrection, suggesting in both instances it was the DOJ and not the defendants, under scrutiny.
She opened her remarks saying: “It is heavy on my heart that we’re doing this today.”
She then compared the two historic moments in U.S. history adding: “When President Trump was being arraigned all because of the weaponized government that has been weaponized against each of you.”
Greene and others claim the prosecutions of January 6 rioters and Trump
are evidence of a “weaponization of the
DOJ” then, she added: “It all started on the day, on January 6,
when we were just doing our constitutional duty to object to Biden’s election.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) leading a panel discussion with Greene and others about the January 6 attack
on the Capitol by a mob of pro-Trump supporters trying to challenge and
overturn Biden’s election. He was asked afterward if they were trying to
rewrite January 6 history, and he
responded: “We’re trying to correct
history.”
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), the one senator holding up DOD promotions
and commissions, just before he dashed off to join Trump at his Bedminster
golf club for a campaign rally following his court hearing tweeted: “I will be standing right next to President
Trump tonight in total support.”
Rep. Byron Donalds
(R-FL) shouted outside the Capitol: “I
stand by him right now. Ten toes down. A bogus investigation.”
Rep. Kat Cammack
(R-FL) said: “The case smacks of a
two-tier justice system. Constituents tell me they never in a million years
would have voted for Trump, but this is insane.”
Sen. Eric Schmitt
(R-MO) said he read the whole indictment then added: “It’s a political hit job.”
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) said: “Trump
is merely the latest victim of the DOJ” and then said he would be “blocking all
DOJ nominees unless the AG changes course. If Merrick Garland wants to use
these officials to harass Joe Biden’s political opponents, we will grind his
department to a halt.”
Rep. Richard Hudson
(R-NC), the Chairman of the NRCC, joined Trump on the plane from a campaign
rally in GA to the one in NC where he introduced Trump on stage.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: “Trump should have never stored the documents at his home, but there was no real harm done since he didn’t appear to give away the documents to China, Saudi Arabia, or other countries.”
Rubio then said he was more worried the
indictment of Trump will “… release a
fury across a politically divided nation.”
Sen. Lisa Murkowski
(R-AK) said of what she’s seen in the indictment: “It looks pretty damning to me.”
Beyond those above
and many others in rabid GOP House this stands out for many from the Senate GOP
Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) while still steering clear of
criticizing Trump said: “I’m not
going to start commenting on the various candidates we have for president.”
My 2 Cents: My earlier related post is here – FYI.
All I can say is review the above again, the events of January 6, and all the allegations, proven and pending against Trump, and I believe any rational person will agree that this “new” GOP owned and operated by Trump is way out of control.
I also believe
this GOP will suffer great losses in 2024 for the attitude they now hold
supporting Trump and the big cases still pending against him.
Having said that, I have faith in and trust the voters, but we have to wait and see. So stay tuned.
Thanks for stopping by.
