Trump & FL Docs Trial: Judge Cannon Set the Date for Monday, May 20, 2024

Illegally-held classified documents - who me
(Nope: Not me, no time, no way, no how)

The below is from the NY TIMES with their breaking news headline followed by the timeline below extracted from the article (formatted to fit the blog):

Trial in Trump FL Documents Case Set for May 20, 2024”

Judge Aileen M. Cannon rejected Trump’s request to delay the trial until after the 2024 election but she also pushed the start date past the DOJ’s request for December.

Cannon said in her a 7-page order that the two-week jury trial will begin on May 20, 2024, at the courthouse in Fort Pierce, FL, where she sits.

Related coverage: WaPo; CNN; NBC; CBS; and FOX; et al.

The FL documents case is just one of the many other criminal and civil legal matters confronting Trump as he seeks to return to the White House. They include:

1. Trump is under indictment in Manhattan on charges stemming from hush-money payments to a porn star before the 2016 election. That case is scheduled to go to trial in March 2024.

2. He also could be indicted on federal charges related to his efforts to remain in office after his defeat in the 2020 election (the so-called “fake electors” probe).

3. Trump also faces DA in Fulton County, GA who is completing her investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn his election loss in Georgia.

4. He also faces a civil trial on fraud in NY in October 2023.

5. Trump still faces still another trial on whether he defamed the writer E. Jean Carroll that is set to open on January 15 — the same day as the GOP Iowa caucuses.

6. Trump, his company, and three of his children face a civil lawsuit on January 29, 2024 that accuses him and his family of using the family name to entice vulnerable people to invest in sham business opportunities.

Key Date Notes: The Cannon docs trial decision (made on July 21 and set for May 20, 2024) is a mere 2 months before the GOP nominating convention in Milwaukee on July 15-18, 2024 and that is only 4 months before the November 5, 2024 election.

So from Cannon’s decision on July 21, 2023 that sets the trial date of May 20, 2024, that amounts to a full 16 months until election day 2024 (November 5, 2024).

My 2 Cents: I suspect more delays from Judge Cannon that will appease Trump as another excuse to delay attempt as his campaign events unfold. Why do I say that?

I simply do not trust or believe Judge Cannon and her loyalty to the law. Her loyalty seems to be to Trump who gave her the job she now holds.

We must wait and see who is right about her timeline that she has established for that May 20, 2024 trial date.

On the surface it appears to favor Trump and his expected delay tactics as I said. I may be wrong, but I don’t think so.

We shall see, so stay tuned.

Thanks for stopping by.
