Very interesting story from TPM here ... in part:
Talk about wimps ... gutless wimps ... there are a bunch in the U.S. Senate ... Why? Even the most popular gun control measures seem to be going nowhere in the Senate.
Despite a concerted push from President Obama, Democratic leaders see no clear path to securing the 60 votes needed to break a promised Republican filibuster and ensure passage of legislation mandating background checks for gun purchases. Along with getting no help from Republicans, numerous Democrats facing re-election next year are skittish.
Twenty-one Democratic seats are being contested in the 2014 elections — many of them in red states where the National Rifle Association, which opposes background checks.
Among them are Sens. Kay Hagan (NC), Mark Pryor (AR), Mary Landrieu (LA) and Max Baucus (MT), who aren’t prepared to support gun checks.
So, I ask: Do they work and serve the NRA and not the people of the country as a whole? We know the GOP to a large extent is in the back pocket of big business and let's face it, the NRA is a big business, especially for Wayne LaPierre who thrives on increasing NRA membership, which in turn equates to him getting a bigger salary.
The NRA's basic message: We need more guns, no controls, and if it means a more concerted campaign effort built on more fear and more hype, so be it.
They love it.
