GOP Immigration Bill: They Know It's DOA — Their Strategy

Picture from MSNBC

Introduction (January 30, 2014):  CAMBRIDGE, MD – House Republican leaders support an immigration reform package that would provide legal status for many of the nation’s 11.7 million unauthorized immigrants, offer a pathway to citizenship to undocumented youth, bolster border security, and expand legal immigration, according to a draft framework released on Thursday.

But here is the catch — the details as it were. The GOP knows their demands will kill any reform as unacceptable to the GOP.  The ingredients of the GOP “plan” will seek a solution that allows immigrants to “come forward and get right with the law” as long as they:

  • Admit they violated the law,
  • Pay back taxes and fines,
  • Pass a background check,
  • Get no “special path to citizenship,"
  • For young undocumented immigrants, known as DREAMers, if they perform military service or receive a college education then can “dream” about citizenship.
DEM Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) says Boehner, told the DEM caucus it is “a special path to citizenship” or nothing, and if they keep insisting on that, then we are not going to get anywhere this year on immigration (huge smile flashed across his face at the same time, I am sure).

Oh, boo-hoo, Mr. Boehner. You already knew the DEM stance. Now you have more ammo for the 2014 election cycle – great ugly, nasty campaign Ads where you can say with a relative straight face, “See, it’s the DEMS who don’t want immigration reform. They killed our plan. Blame them.”

This is how the massive, well-funded, and greatly improved GOP PR machine works. They have mastered the PR skill.

If Mr. Boehner can't get this bill passed and signed into law his way, expect this (phony or not remains to be seen):
