Very concerning
article from The Hill with this headline:
“Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL)
echoes Trump’s Proud Boys call to Stand
back and stand by comment amid courthouse appearance”
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) echoed Trump’s infamous 2020 call for the Proud Boys to “Stand back and stand by” in a Gaetz statement from outside the Manhattan courthouse on Thursday May 16.
Gaetz was among the cast of other Republican lawmakers who attended
the Manhattan criminal trial this week in a show of support for Trump.
Specially, Gaetz wrote in
a post on the social platform X, along with a photo of himself in a hallway
outside the courtroom, donning a red tie and suit in the background, with an
out-of-focus Trump in the foreground saying: “Standing back and standing by,
Mr. President.”
Gaetz joined GOP Reps. Lauren Boebert (CO); Andy Biggs (AZ);
Mike Waltz (FL); and Eli Crane (AZ) in the courtroom, while Reps. Andy Ogles
(TN); Anna Paulina Luna (FL); Ralph Norman (SC); and House Freedom Caucus Chair
Bob Good (VA) were also seen outside the Manhattan courthouse (latest group pictured above).
Boebert and Gaetz were spotted sitting in the first row of the gallery, next to Eric and Lara Trump and Trump’s Secret Service agents.
Rep. Bob Good (VA) was also
seen seated in the first row, on the other side of Trump’s security detail.
Background to that quote: Trump was asked during a presidential debate with President Biden in 2020 whether he would denounce violence from white supremacy groups.
Trump dodged
the question, but after Biden mentioned that far-right group, Trump said: “Proud
Boys, stand back and stand by.”
FYI: Leaders of the Proud Boys were convicted of seditious
conspiracy after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Nation’s Capitol.
Jeremy Joseph Bertino, a member of the group, told the House committee that investigated the Capitol attack that membership for the Proud Boys “Tripled, probably after Trump's debate comments” (AP report).
Bertino pleaded guilty to plotting with other members to
violently stop the transfer of presidential power after Trump lost the 2020
election to Biden.
Trump the next day said: “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are,” but after facing widespread criticism, then said: “Whoever they are, they have to stand down. Let law enforcement do their work.”
Trump was immediately eviscerated by Democrats for making those comments, while the Proud Boys group celebrated Trump’s remark — sharing a new logo that included that phrase “Stand back and Stand by).
(FYI: That is also a well-known term used by the military that means get ready for a sh*t storm - heavy action is forthcoming - get ready and be prepared.
A spokesperson for
Gaetz declined to comment further on the lawmaker’s post, saying in an emailed
statement: “The tweet speaks for itself.”
My 2 Cents: In my opinion and only in my opinion Matt Gaetz should be expelled from Congress for the statement as well as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for her statement: “We need a national divorce: meaning Red states should divorce themselves from the country and from the Blue states - ergo: a Civil War meaning.”
FYI: It is illegal for state to advocate or try to secede from the country.
Others like Taylor Greene and now it like Gaetz, too, seem to be arguing for secession as a constitutional right. However, in the USSC case of Texas v. White (1869), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that unilateral secession was illegal and unconstitutional.
Other GOP conservatives in the Trump love boat and camp in Congress as cited above and earlier too that also included Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson and Sen. Tuberville, et al showed up to spew their nonsense supporting Trump now on trial. Where will this all end is anyone's guess - but ugly does come to mind.
Thanks for stopping by.
