Article from USA TODAY with this critical headline: Final USSC decisions
for this term forthcoming:
“Supreme Court
dropping decisions on guns, abortion, Trump immunity, and more in coming days”
The Supreme Court will issue a flurry of blockbuster decisions: gun rights, abortion access, social media content, homelessness, federal regulatory authority, the opioid crisis, and whether or not Trump and other January 6 convicted persons can be prosecuted for trying to overturn the 2020 election (his demand is for absolute immunity).
The high court, which tries to dispense of pending cases by
the end of June, has an unusually large number of decisions pending,
particularly on hot button issues. Also, given the current pace of opinions, the term
could slip into early July, something that has not happened since the height of
the pandemic.
These opinions will be dropping in the lead up to
the first presidential debate, on June 27, between Trump
and President Joe Biden.
President Biden has already tried to make the Supreme Court a major issue in the 2024 campaign
saying during a recent star-studded Hollywood fundraiser: “The Supreme Court has
never been as out of kilter as it is today. I mean never.”
Trump at every chance touts the three appointments he made
that gave the court a 6-3 supermajority of conservatives as one of his top
accomplishments as president.
But Trump's campaign was circumspect last week when commenting on the court’s decisions to strike (1) his 2018 ban on bump stocks, and (2) throw out a challenge to a widely used abortion pill Mifepristone.
My 2 Cents: Those decisions listed above with the immunity one being paramount are critical to
the other three cases and charges pending against Trump (in DC, GA, and FL).
As simply stated as
possible no president now or ever should be granted absolute immunity for any
crime. The price of that power is too harsh to contemplate.
If the high court grants
that immunity then that will mark the end of America. And, that is NOT
hyperbole, either. This is based on everything that Trump has said and done
since the Capitol insurrection attempt on January 6 designed to reverse the
2020 election outcome in which he lost and he still can’t admit that defeat or
concede that election.
Thanks for stopping by.
